Edwin Warner Dean, a former summer resident of Southampton, died on January 9. He was 77.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1936, he attended Tower Hill School, Brooks School, Yale University and Harvard Law School. He had a prominent career at Paine Webber Jackson & Curtis. He was a principal in the 1986 leveraged acquisition of Danskin Inc. from Beatrice Companies, subsequently serving as vice chairman of the board, general counsel and secretary of Danskin Inc. He married Kathy Wood in 1986, and then in 1997, he and his family relocated to Boulder, Colorado, to enjoy the big outdoors and a family-focused life. In the past four years, he and his wife created and developed TaneoTalent, a successful national sales recruiting firm.
Mr. Dean was a member of the Shinnecock Golf Club, the Southampton Bathing Corporation and the Meadow Club.
Survivors said Mr. Dean was a gentleman and a kind man and that he was admired for his quick, witty sense of humor, his smile and impeccable manners. As a constant and committed father, he quietly taught by example, they said, and poured his heart into loving and guiding his three sons. In his later years, he took great pride in his culinary expertise as “Chef Boy-r-Dean.”
In addition to his wife, Mr. Dean is survived by three sons, Warner, Joel and Riley; many nieces and nephews; and 10 godchildren. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Emily and Joel E. “Dreamy” Dean; and a sister, Milbrey “Mimi” Dean Ross Crompton.
Mr. Dean was named for his grandfather, Edwin Warner, and interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville with his grandparents and next to his sister and parents. Memorial services will be held in New York City, Nashville and Boulder.
