Emily E. Whalen of Quogue died on September 8 of complications from pneumonia. She had just celebrated her 90th birthday.
Mrs. Whalen was born on September 2, 1926, in Brooklyn. She was a resident of New York City until she moved permanently to Amagansett in November 1997. She began coming to East Hampton for weekends and summers in 1966. In September 2014 she moved to Quogue to be closer to family.
She was a graduate of Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut, and attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture.
In 1958 she married Thomas C. Whalen and they had two daughters, Emily and Annie.
A lover of the water, Mrs. Whalen treasured her summers on Long Island sailing and swimming in Gardiners Bay. She swam in her pool right up until she died. She was an active and involved member of The Devon Yacht Club in Amagansett from 1966 to 2015.
She is survived by her daughters, Emily DeMello and Anna Petrocelli; two grandsons, Thomas (14) and Richard (12). She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas C. Whalen.
