The Hampton Classic horse show, a staple of late summer in Bridgehampton, has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event, typically held over two weeks in late August and early September, culminating with the Grand Prix on Labor Day weekend, would have observed its 45th anniversary this year.
“It is difficult to express how disappointing this is for everyone,” the event’s executive director, Shanette Cohen, said in a press release. “However, given the current situation and the uncertainty that lies ahead, our board reached the conclusion that there really is no other option.”
The Classic is one of the biggest outdoor horse shows in the country, attracting some of the best show jumping riders in the world. Held on the showgrounds on Snake Hollow Road just north of the Bridgehampton Commons shopping center, the Classic features six show rings, a boutique garden with 70 vendors, and other attractions.
According to the release, the show hosts more than 200 classes of competition for riders of all ages and abilities, ranging from leadline for young children to the grand prix.
“Naturally, the safety and wellbeing of our exhibitors and everyone involved with the Classic takes first priority and the board is unanimous in its believe that the wisest course of action is to put all our efforts and resources into ensuring that the Classic is able to return next year at the same high standard that everyone expects,” Ms. Cohen said.
