A tropical storm warning is in effect for Suffolk County as Tropical Storm Elsa moves its way up the East Coast.

The National Weather Service issued the warning Thursday morning. It had previously issued a storm watch.

A Tropical Storm Warning means tropical storm-force winds are expected in the area within the next 36 hours. According to the service, East Enders could see peak winds of 10-20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph.

Elsa was over South Carolina Thursday morning and expected to pass near or over the Mid-Atlantic coast late Thursday night and near or over Long Island on Friday morning, according to the service.

No storm surge is anticipated, but flooding from heavy rains could occur. Peak rainfall amounts of 1 inch or more are expected.
