The East Hampton Town Board resolved to establish a Tick Advisory Committee when it met last Thursday, November 7. Lyme disease is the most widespread vector-borne disease in the United States, with the federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimating around 450,000 diagnoses every year, according to the resolution. Incidence of tick-borne disease in Suffolk County is far higher than other jurisdictions in the state, particularly on the South Fork, the resolution states. Along with Lyme, tick-borne illnesses include babesiosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, hard tick relapsing fever and Powassan encephalitis. A public hearing on East Hampton Town’s fiscal year 2025 budget drew no comment last Thursday, November 7, and later in the meeting, the Town Board voted to override the 2 percent tax levy cap. The board is expected to vote to authorize the $103,925,137 budget on November 19, one day ahead of the state-imposed deadline. In its tentative form, the budget had a proposed spending total of $103,722,303. After three work session presentations in October, the agreed-upon preliminary budget adds an additional $202,834. It represents an 8.8 percent increase in spending, or $8.4 million, over the current fiscal year. ...

Some residents said that proposed amendments to East Hampton Town’s zoning code go too far, while others said they do not go far enough. East Hampton Town should reduce the minimum lot area requirement for attached accessory dwelling units from 20,000 to 10,000 square feet, according to a recommendation by a committee formed as part of the town’s “All Hands on Housing” initiative, the Town Board was told on Tuesday, November 12. Another of the committee’s recommendations is to remove the provision that only those whose residence in the town is their primary legal residence can build attached or detached accessory dwelling units, or ADUs.
