No, mass transit is not the answer, except for people who work in the villages proper [“Stuck in Gridlock,” Editorial, November 7]. All you have to do is observe the trade parade on Routes 27 and 39 to see that it is made up of vans delivering goods and trucks loaded with the tools of the drivers’ trades. Now that this year’s election cycle is finally over, I would like to take a little time to publicly thank one of the most dedicated public officials that has represented the citizens of the East End, the 1st District assemblyman, Fred Thiele. Fred is retiring from elected office, first as a Suffolk County legislator, then Southampton Town supervisor, and finally as a member of the Assembly, where he spent 30 successful years. We all arose while it was still pitch black outside, on a cold and raw morning. We drove to our assigned locations and arrived well before 5 a.m. We worked all day, either signing in voters or distributing ballots, or running the tabulating machines, and we didn’t stop until 9 p.m., after the last voter had finished. At about 10:15 p.m. on Friday, November 8, the wind blew down a tree across the street. The tree knocked down the electric pole, and an electric fire started. The response was very fast and professional, from the calming 911 operator (I am sorry I did not get her name) to the fire department and PSEG.
