Claire Ruth Swanik of East Quogue and Palm City died on March 25. She was 76. She was born in Brooklyn on June 25, 1948, attended Holy Innocents School and St. Edmund’s High School, and subsequently Woods Secretarial School, before graduating from NYU. In her early career, she parlayed her love of skiing into a business, Mahogany Ski Tours, with her dear friend MaryAnn Cullen, running trips to upstate New York. Southampton Town Police caught a man who allegedly stabbed a passenger aboard a Suffolk County Transit bus on Friday afternoon and then fled on foot. Just before 4 p.m., the bus had left the County Center and was traveling south on CR 51 in Riverhead when the suspect, 23-year-old Rene Alexander Elias Chaj of Mastic, stabbed the victim with a knife and then ran, according to police. Southampton Town Police patrol units, Community Response Units, detectives, New York State Police officers and Flanders Northampton Ambulance responded to the area and began treatment of the stabbing victim, who was transported to ...

New York State troopers are investigating a bullet-riddled vehicle found on West Gate Road on the Shinnecock Territory in Southampton on Wednesday morning. Police said the 2006 Chrysler Minivan was unoccupied when it was discovered and no injuries were reported. It was discovered between 10:30 and 11 a.m. The investigation is ongoing, and troopers ask anyone with information about the minivan to call 631-756-3300.
