'Wings Over Haiti' Soars Again

author on May 17, 2019

In 2010, in the aftermath of a terrible earthquake in Haiti, Sag Harbor artist and pilot Jonathan Nash Glynn became one of the first private pilots to bring medical supplies to remote areas of the island nation. He created Wings Over Haiti, a nonprofit organization, and assembled a team to build a school there. That first school now has over 200 students and is growing by one grade each year. The students get two meals a day and medical attention, which they wouldn’t get if not for the school.

“You have to feed the kids first. Only then you can feed their minds,” says Mr. Glynn.

Now, he’s raising funds to finish building his second school in Haiti and on June 22 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., will host the third annual “Hamptons Artists for Haiti Benefit” at East Hampton Airport from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. The Honorary Committee includes Donna Karan, Patricia Arquette, Eric Fischl, Maria Bello, GE Smith, Taylor Barton, Molly Channing, and Emily Wickersham.

Mr. Glynn’s second school is almost ready to open its doors to 40 more students, on the way to 400. Proceeds from this benefit will be used to build more classrooms and give the kids of Ranquitte, Haiti, an education, which they currently cannot access.

The Wings Over Haiti event at East Hampton Airport on Daniels Hole Road will be spread over three airplane hangers. It features a silent art auction of paintings, photographs and sculptures by 50 East End artists, curated by Coco Myers of folioeast. The event also features an open bar and food catered by Beach House Catering, raffle prizes, and music by DJ Gian Carlo. Mr. Glynn’s plane, which originally brought the medical supplies to Haiti, will also be on display.

Tickets are $125 at wingsoverhaiti.net with children under 12 admitted free to the family-friendly event.
