A looming disaster in one of the most spectacular environments on Earth sparks a rescue mission unlike any other in “Sea of Shadows,” a riveting new documentary with the intensity of a Hollywood thriller from National Geographic Documentary Films.

On Friday, August 16, at 8:30 p.m., Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) will host an outdoor screening of “Sea of Shadows” on the deck of Gurney’s in Montauk as part of its Air, Land + Sea series.

David Nugent, HIFF’s artistic director, will be joined by special guests at the screening, which will be preceded by a sunset cocktail reception overlooking the ocean at 6:30 p.m.

When Mexican drug cartels and Chinese traffickers join forces to poach the rare totoaba fish in the Sea of Cortez, their deadly methods threaten virtually all marine life in the region, including the most elusive and endangered whale species on Earth, the vaquita porpoise.

Directed by Richard Ladkani, “Sea of Shadows” follows a team of dedicated scientists, high-tech conservationists, investigative journalists and undercover agents as well as the Mexican Navy as they put their lives on the line to save the last remaining vaquitas and bring the international crime syndicate to justice. The film’s executive producer is Leonardo DiCaprio and it was the winner of the Audience Award at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

Tickets to the screening are $23 for HIFF members. Single memberships are available now for $50, which will provide access to screening and reception. For more information, visit hamptonsfilmfest.org.
