Thursday, December 19, marked another disgraceful chapter in the long history between the Southampton Town government and the Shinnecock Nation. A week before Christmas, the Southampton Town Board voted, 3-2, to engage in economic warfare by pursuing litigation against the Shinnecock Nation’s gas station plaza project. I was very happy to hear that Red Horse Market will be moving into the old Schmidt’s location [“Owners of Red Horse Market Buy Building That Was Former Home of Schmidt’s in Southampton,” 27east.com, November 22]. When they moved out, Schmidt’s left a big gap in Southampton Village. I would suggest that in order to show support, the village could put in a crosswalk between the post office and their location. I listened with interest and mounting concern to the recent “27Speaks” podcast [“Ethics Board Finds Violations,” December 19]. It was shocking to see Robin Brown’s image plastered on the front page for what seem to be minor accusations and unsupported findings. It also appears to me to be routine operating procedure in the village for trustees and other officials to be offered free attendance at events.
