Fractured Trust

Thursday, December 19, marked another disgraceful chapter in the long history between the Southampton Town government and the Shinnecock Nation. A week before Christmas, the Southampton Town Board voted, 3-2, to engage in economic warfare by pursuing litigation against the Shinnecock Nation’s gas station plaza project. The gas station plaza project has been in development for over a year and will be a vital revenue stream for the nation. It is located on our sovereign land that has never been taxed or zoned by the Town of Southampton. The town’s actions have deteriorated the relationship between the Shinnecock Nation and ... 7 Jan 2025 by Staff Writer

Celebrate Support

Looking back on 2024, the Noyac Civic Council has much to celebrate and be grateful for. In 2024, we celebrated our 70th year of advocacy for quality of life concerns for Noyac through social, educational and governmental interaction, and charitable endeavors. This advocacy could not have been possible without the dedicated backing of our officers, members and local government officials. We are grateful for the generous financial support we received in 2024 from our members, local merchants and restaurants, without which we could not sustain our advocacy and operations. We’d like to recognize local merchants and restaurants that generously donated ... by Staff Writer

Crosswalks Needed

I was very happy to hear that Red Horse Market will be moving into the old Schmidt’s location [“Owners of Red Horse Market Buy Building That Was Former Home of Schmidt’s in Southampton,” 27east.com, November 22]. When they moved out, Schmidt’s left a big gap in Southampton Village. I would suggest that in order to show support, the village could put in a crosswalk between the post office and their location. I know Dennis Schmidt had tried, unsuccessfully, to get this done. Hopefully, that would cut down on the number of people I see driving across the street from one ... by Staff Writer

Deeply Damaging

I listened with interest and mounting concern to the recent “27Speaks” podcast [“Ethics Board Finds Violations,” December 19]. It was shocking to see Robin Brown’s image plastered on the front page for what seem to be minor accusations and unsupported findings. It also appears to me to be routine operating procedure in the village for trustees and other officials to be offered free attendance at events. The question of whether there were related pending matters that might compromise judgment is the salient point. It makes one wonder why Robin, whom I find to be a kind and well-intentioned public servant, ... by Staff Writer

Plunging In

On behalf of the Westhampton Ambulance Volunteer Water Rescue Squad, we would like to thank all the people who braved the cold air, water and wind to participate in our first-ever Polar Plunge on Saturday, December 21. It was a true Polar Plunge! All of your generous donations will be going to buy rescue equipment so we can better serve you in our community. Thank you to our brave plungers, our donors on go fund me, and our spectators. Many thanks to the local agencies: Westhampton Beach Village Police, Westhampton Ambulance volunteers, New York State Troopers, the Village of Westhampton ... by Staff Writer

Wise Ministering

I am writing to offer my thanks to Councilmen Michael Iasilli and Tommy John Schiavoni for their votes against suing the Shinnecock Nation for construction on their tribal lands. As a lifelong resident born on lands tended for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples, I feel tremendous gratitude for their wise ministering of our land, despite the efforts of many to grab their lands and eradicate their language and culture. It is time for us to fully acknowledge who the Shinnecock are and to support them in their efforts to create a thriving nation. Unless you change your points of ... by Staff Writer

Champion of Reuse

At long last, Suffolk County has a county executive who fully understands the need to send highly treated wastewater back into the underground water table, on which the people of Suffolk depend as their “sole source” of potable water, instead of dumping it in nearby waterbodies, including the Atlantic Ocean. And Ed Romaine has legislative support. Further, providing funding to do this was the passing of a referendum in the November election, amending the Suffolk County Water Quality Restoration Act and increasing the county sales tax by one-eighth of a penny to raise money to build sewers and install high-tech ... by Karl Grossman

Keeping Warm

If I could draw any direct line between Jimmy Carter and me, it was his alleged impact on my afternoon chores. As the price of oil rose, so did the number of wood stoves in our house. To feed them, we had a massive, continually expanding wood pile. It did not fill me with joy to see its peak outperforming the chicken coop in height. After a storm, or during the height of Dutch elm disease, the pile dwarfed the garage. Our big, old farmhouse had a furnace, but my father kept the thermostat at 60 degrees. The wood pile ... by Marilee Foster

Body Found in East Hampton Woods Identified as Missing Riverside Man

The body of a Riverside man reported missing in November last year was found in a wooded area off Route 114 in East Hampton on Monday, January 6. According to Southampton Town Police, a hunter in the woods located the body, and East Hampton Town Police and detectives, as well as Suffolk County homicide detectives, responded. The Suffolk County medical examiner’s office was contacted and removed the body for further investigation. The deceased was identified as Luis Vargas-Arias, 56. He had been reported missing to Southampton Town Police. According to the department’s November 3, 2024, bulletin, Vargas-Arias was last seen ... 6 Jan 2025 by Christopher Walsh
