Construction is nearing completion for the Shinnecock Indian Nation's first billboard along the south side of Sunrise Highway on tribe-owned land in Hampton Bays.
On Wednesday evening, two 30-foot-tall LED screens were installed on both sides of the structure above the base. A 15-foot-tall display of the Nation's seal was secured at the top the following morning. The billboard across the highway, on the north side, has yet to see much progress.
Construction began late last month and there have since been several requests from Southampton Town and the State Department of Transportation to stop the work. Despite the attempts, the Nation has been proceeding with its plans, claiming full authority over the site.
The Nation and the State DOT are in the process of pursuing litigation against each other over this project. Last week, the state agency said that it is in consultation with the state attorney general's office to take legal action after issuing a stop work order to the contractor, Idon Media, along with a cease and desist letter to the tribe, on Friday. Tribal trustees said a few days later that the Nation plans to submit a court filing soon.
