A divided Southampton Village Board voted last week, 4-1, to hire a police officer who until recently worked for the Village of Westhampton Beach, where in 2021 he was suspended following an off-duty rollover accident. According to a letter of reprimand, he had carried a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and left the scene of the accident without promptly reporting it. A mother who is suing the Southampton School District for negligence, alleging that two students, on three separate occasions, injured her child at the elementary school, won a court victory this month when a judge ordered the district to produce records that it had previously refused to disclose.
