Firefighters from Westhampton Beach and East Quogue responded to a vehicle fire at about 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday. First on the scene — the parking lot just south of the Sunrise Highway exit ramp on Old Riverhead Road — Westhampton Beach Third Assistant Chief Jeff Wachenfeld found a propane truck with its cab fully engulfed in flames and the driver safe outside the truck.
The crew of the first Westhampton Beach Fire Department engine on the scene used two hose lines to shoot water into the cab and onto the truck simultaneously. The East Quogue Fire Department responded with three engines and a chief. Westhampton Beach sent two engines, a tanker, and two chiefs.
The two departments poured water onto the truck until the blaze was extinguished and the tank had cooled. Both departments were called out because the parking lot, about 200 yards south of the exit ramp, is located within feet of the boundary line between the two districts.
County Road 31 was closed in both directions from Stewart Avenue to the Sunrise Highway until approximately 7 p.m. There were no reported injuries.
