Our shoreline, bays and wetlands are crucial to our Long Island lifestyle, the health of our environment and the safety of our communities. After Superstorm Sandy, over $200 million of taxpayer money was used to buy zombie houses and other lots on or near the water. This was done to prevent rebuilding and the development of private homes and structures along our precious shores. We are dismayed that there are properties where permits have been approved by the Southampton Town Board and Trustees to build large homes along Flanders and the Peconic Bay, negating the potential benefits of leaving the ... 30 Jun 2024 by Staff Writer

Glossed Over

Although Michael Wright’s coverage of the June 26 Town Board meeting on the topic of battery energy storage systems was accurate [“Board To Extend BESS Moratorium,” June 27], he glossed over a few points. When Councilman Tommy John Schiavoni asked the attorney for Canal Southampton BESS why they needed an adjournment to present their argument for exemption, Keith Archer responded that a team member was not available, and “life happens.” This elicited an audible reaction from the audience. The applicant needed the adjournment because they had not completed the requirement to provide public notice. Mr. Archer said, “I thought the ... by Staff Writer

Amazing Success

The recent Palm Tree Music Festival, held on the grounds of the Shinnecock Nation, was an amazing success on every level, in spite of being a very last-minute change of venue from Gabreski Airport [“Shinnecock Nation Celebrates Smooth Handling of Giant Music Festival On Saturday,” 27east.com, June 26]. From my personal perspective, the mere fact that I was able to drive along Montauk Highway from my home in Quogue to a family party in Water Mill that afternoon, without any delays, speaks equally to the amazing efforts put forth by all levels of local government, with a special thank you ... by Staff Writer

A Backstop

We can’t have a free-for-all — we must respect the president, and Joe Biden stepping down is a mistake. What we need to do is shake up the team. We have to replace Kamala Harris with a known, solid personality who has shown the American people their caring nature, but with the fierceness necessary to combat Donald Trump. We need the new vice president to campaign in lockstep with Biden and plan to govern with the Biden policy intact. Joe is the president with a backstop. The public must be protected at all times. Andrew Cuomo is a the person ... by Staff Writer

Stop the Nonsense

I applaud The Southampton Press’s June 20 editorial, “Merger Is Overdue.” Although The Press comments that “it is hard to get the voters on board when one district in the merger appears to be winning and the other losing, at least financially,” I believe both districts are presently losing financially and will be losing even more if the merger is not enacted. Presently, the Southampton School District budget projects a cost of $64,000 per student. For the 100 students from Shinnecock Territory, the district receives $5 million, or $50,000 per student. So Southampton School District taxpayers are already subsidizing the ... by Staff Writer

Light Show

We arrive at our longest days with a hot southwest wind. Vintage meteorologists, those who existed before satellites, are hard to find. Their ancient opinions on the weather live in the minds of generational farmers and fishermen. As for the summer solstice, the weather on that day will be the prevailing weather of the growing season. The local radio station is old enough, connected enough, to broadcast this observation, and I’m sure many are grateful for the gesture. At the end of this long day, I sit down to take off my boots. All the windows are open, the front ... by Marilee Foster
