Hampton Bays firefighters responded to a September 30 house fire on Bittersweet Avenue that sent two people to the hospital.

Dispatched at 2:09 p.m., they found the home with black smoke pouring out. A neighbor called the fire in, according to Southampton Town Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Susan Ralph.

A 74-year old man, a 74-year old woman and a dog all escaped the flames, Lt. Ralph said. He was taken by Suffolk County Aviation to University Hospital at Stony Brook for treatment of burns; she was transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital via Hampton Bays Ambulance.

Upon arriving at the scene Chief Chris Hansen set up an incident comman, and reported heavy smoke conditions with active fire.. The fire was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes by members of the Hampton Bays Fire Department.

Responding units consisted of the Chief Officer and three Assistant Chiefs, 38 Firefighters, Two Engines, a Ladder Truck, Two Fire Police Units and a Safety Officer. East Quogue Fire Department responded with an engine and an ambulance for Rapid Intervention. Southampton Fire Department responded with an engine for stand-by at Hampton Bays Fire Headquarters and responded to assist with the Medi-Vac Landing Zone.

Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance responded for one victim and firefighter rehab. and were assisted by Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance. Suffolk County Police Department Aviation responded for Medi-Vac.

At approximately 3:30 pm and the scene was turned over to the Southampton Town Fire Marshall’s Office. The fire did not seem suspicious in nature Lt. Ralph said.

According to town records, the home has been owned by Daniel and Virginia Cellucci since 1986. The 704-square-foot residence has two bedrooms and one bath.

Boats are again able to safely transit the Shinnecock Canal this weekend after a county contractor completed repairs to a broken gate in the canal's mechanical lock that had created hazardous conditions since early last month.
