Southampton Intermediate School sixth grader Claudia Morales and her bus driver Rick Berkowski were recently recognized for following important bus safety procedures. Berkowski consistently reminds students that they must wait for a crossing signal from a bus driver before crossing the street to a bus. Morales did just that recently when Berkowski noticed a passing car that was not yielding to the flashing lights and the bus stop sign. Morales exhibited great listening skills and waited for Berkowski’s signal, ensuring her safety. COURTESY SOUTHAMPTON SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Southampton Fire Department brought its
engines, ladder truck, and stump jumper to Tuckahoe School last week to teach the students about fire safety. Students saw the vehicles in action and learned how they are used during emergencies. A highlight of the visit was the simulated smokehouse. In this safe, controlled environment, fog is created to mimic the conditions of a real fire. Students crawled through the smokehouse under the watchful eyes of the firefighters. The experience taught the students what to do if they ever find themselves in a smoke-filled room.
