Three Southampton Elementary School fourth graders, Lake Rendon, Gisell Rosas and Alexandra Alfaro, under the guidance of music teacher Samantha McEvoy, recently participated in the 15th annual SCMEA PEAK Festival at Northport High School. The day was filled with exciting new musical experiences that each student shared with their parent or guardian. Together, they participated in chorus, world drumming, ukulele and singing games. Dayton Avenue and Eastport elementary schools’ students received a loud round of applause as they waked down the red carpet during the schools’ individual Readers Walk of Fame. The parallel events were a culmination of the schools’ summer reading program, which encouraged students to read daily and record the number of minutes read. More than 75 local veterans gathered with family and friends at Raynor Country Day School for its annual Veterans Day ceremony. The honored guests were welcomed with a patriotic parade of red, white, and blue as the pre-K through third-grade students marched into the auditorium with pomp and circumstance. Guests were also treated to performances by music students. Student speakers included fourth-grader Samantha Gorny and sixth-graders Rory Coonan, Sophie Bracovic, Lola Schwinn, Luna Munoz, Sean Kelly, and Bradley Ceberek. Students reflected upon the veterans and their importance to our nation. Congressman Nick LaLota's office was present to share a proclamation of citizenship to Raynor Country Day School. Additionally, Assemblyman Fred Thiele, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, and Town Councilman, Dan Panico, were on hand to share words of appreciation to the veterans. In addition, the students hosted a moment of silence for those who have passed, presented a wreath of remembrance, and sixth-grader student Sean Kelly performed Taps.
