On November 21, Tony Rosenthal’s “Cube 72,” a gift from the late artist, was reinstalled on the front lawn of Guild Hall for all to enjoy. The sculpture is part of Guild Hall’s permanent collection, and like his best-known Astor Place sculpture, “The Alamo 1967,” “Cube 72” was designed to appear as if it defies gravity and can spin on its base with minimal effort.

As Rosenthal himself said in 1980, “I like to make public sculptures in which people can participate, that have a functional purpose as well as an aesthetic one.”

Thanks to the Estate of Tony Rosenthal and restoration by Liberty Iron Works, the cube returns to Guild Hall with full mobility restored. The public is encouraged to come by and take it for a “spin.”

Guild Hall is at 158 Main Street in East Hampton. For details, visit guildhall.org.
