Saturday afternoon, December 9, is the last scheduled public tour date for the Steinbeck House property in 2023. Tours are free to the public and advanced registration is required on the website — steinbeckhouseny.org.

Steinbeck House is in the Village of Sag Harbor, where the Nobel Prize-winning author lived from 1955 until his death in 1968, and received the prestigious award in 1962. Steinbeck wrote the popular “Travels With Charley,” as well as “Winter of Our Discontent” and “America and Americans” in the village.

The Town of Southampton, Sag Harbor Partnership, and State Assemblyman Fred Thiele, along with John Avlon, April Gornik, Diana Howard, Susan Mead and Kathryn Szoka, worked to preserve John and Elaine Steinbeck’s home after it went on the market in 2021. The property was formally preserved in April 2023 thanks to the town’s unanimous decision to use Community Preservation Funds, along with funds from the state and private donations for the purchase.

Steinbeck House Saturday property tours will continue in January 2024. The house will be open for tours on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day. Steinbeck’s writing studio, Joyous Garde, is open on all tour dates.

Visit the website for more information and to register for a tour.
