Tree cutting crews took down two century-old American elm trees on either side of East Hampton Village's main intersection last week. The trees had been deteriorating in recent years and were becoming a hazard, the village said. The village will grind out most of the stumps but the massive root systems of the trees will remain. The LVIS said they will figure out if a new tree can be planted in the existing enclosure, or if the enclosures should be relocated to a let a new tree grow unfettered. DOUG KUNTZ
