The East Hampton Library’s Long Island Collection presents a lecture with Ryan Carr, author of the book “Samson Occom: Radical Hospitality in the Native Northeast,” on Friday, June 7, at 5 p.m.

Carr, a professor at Columbia University, will talk about his new book and the impact of early Mohegan Presbyterian Minister Samson Occom.

Occom married Montaukett woman Mary Fowler and played a prominent role on Eastern Long Island. Occom was one the first Indigenous writers to publish in English. He and his Montaukett brother-in-law built a community of Christian natives from multiple tribes, which they called Brothertown. Carr will talk about Occom, Northeast Indigenous cultures, and the intersection of Christianity and Indigeneity in America.

This is a free event. Advanced registration is requested and can be found at easthamptonlibrary.org.

For more information contact Andrea Meyer, Librarian/Archivist, Head of Collection via email andrea@easthamptonlibrary.org or call 631-324-0222 ext. 4.
