Yale Nelson's 'Incredible Journey' Screening at Southampton Cultural Center

authorStaff Writer on Jun 24, 2024

The 2008 historical documentary film, “Incredible Journey, the Story of West Hampton Dunes”, will be screened at the Southampton Cultural Center on July 20 at 8 p.m. Produced and directed by Yale Nelson, “Incredible Journey” highlights the importance of maintaining the ecology and integrity of Long Island’s south shore barrier island system. The film documents how a community called to action can have a positive impact on our environment and pays tribute to the tenacious men and women who saved their beach community.

“Incredible Journey” is an important documentary that you don’t want to miss,” said Mr. Nelson. “Due to the continuing discussion regarding climate change, rising sea levels and beach erosion and considering the intense flooding that occurred along the South Shore and East End this past winter, I decided it was a good time to screen my film again.”

The 92-minute film traces the geological history of Long Island and the barrier beach, the formation of Moriches and Shinnecock Inlets in the 1930s, the story behind the Westhampton Beach Groin Field, the beach erosion problems of the 1970s and 1980s, the devastation caused by the ocean-to-bay breach of 1992 and the birth of the village of West Hampton Dunes. On-camera interviews are conducted with village officials, local politicians, independent coastal geologists, erosion control experts and officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The documentary contains archival still photographs, never before seen storm destruction video, broadcasts from network television, current day footage and an original music score and soundtrack.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at scc.org or at the door. The Southampton Cultural Center is located at 25 Pond Lane, Southampton.
