To mark the anniversary month of the passing of the great Spanish Master of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia ( February 21, 1893 – June 2, 1987), Robert Secrist, guitar virtuoso, will perform a program on Sunday June 19, 3 to 5 p.m. at the Masonic Temple in Sag Harbor.
Secrist will highlight some of the Segovia’s most popular repertoire including a select composition from Secrist’s all-Bach album “Bach to the Country” — among Apple Music’s top rated classical recordings of 2021 in Chile. The concert will also feature beloved pieces of the classical guitar literature spanning 500 years as well as gems from the Great American Songbook.
In a lineage that dates back to the 19th century, Secrist’s world renowned teachers have included, Andres Segovia, the Spanish great grandfather of the classical guitar whose Bach transcriptions were a first and instantly elevated the status of the instrument. Additionally, Secrist studied with Leonid Bolotine, violinist in the legendary NBC Orchestra under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. Secrist brings this precious, unbroken chain of interpretive genius into the 21st century as Bolotine was a contemporary of the violin giants, Jascha Heifetz and Nathan Milstein, who all studied together in the iconic St. Petersburg School in the early 1900s under the tutelage of the famed Hungarian violinist, Leopold Auer, 1845-1930.
Since making his Carnegie Hall debut more than 40 years ago, Secrist has brought decades of musical influences to the stage with a repertoire spanning 500 years from John Dowland to J.S. Bach to the Great American Songbook to the Beatles and into the 21st century.
Secrist will be available for a meet-and-greet refreshments and CD signing reception after the concert. Admission $20. For more information visit masonicmusicseries.com. The Masonic Temple is at 200 Main Street, Sag Harbor, upstairs from the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum.
