The Long Island Collection of the East Hampton Library will present an online lecture, “Archaeology of the Fowler House in Freetown,” with speaker Dr. Allison McGovern on May 20, at 4 p.m. via Zoom.

Dr. McGovern, a Senior Archaeologist with VHB, an engineering, surveying, landscape architecture and geology firm, will share insights from a recent excavation at the circa 1880s George and Sarah Fowler House in the Freetown neighborhood of East Hampton.

The archaeological investigation by VHB was funded by the Town of East Hampton as part of the ongoing preservation work at the site, which is a town-owned historic property and designated town landmark. The Fowler House helps tell the story of the Montauketts who lived in East Hampton's "Freetown" area. The site is the only designated landmark connected to the Montaukett nation.

Dr. McGovern is an inaugural recipient of the Robert D.L. Gardiner fellowship for "Writing the History of Greater New York" at the Gotham Center for New York City History for her forthcoming book project “Long Island Dirt.”

The event was rescheduled from March and is now being offered as an online event. A link to join the event by phone or email will be sent the day of the program. All are welcome to attend. Advance reservations are requested at: Eventbrite.com.

For more information, contact Andrea Meyer, Librarian/Archivist, Head of Collection, Long Island Collection at andrea@easthamptonlibrary.org or 631-324-0222 ext. 4.
