On Thursday, December 17, at 6 p.m., The Peter Matthiessen Center will host a virtual gathering featuring an intimate reading of a few favorite passages of Peter Matthiessen’s most admired works by former friends and colleagues in the literary, environmental, human rights and Zen Buddhist world.

Scholar and environmentalist Bill McKibben will take part in a special presentation. Naturalist and New York Times best-selling author Carl Safina and environmentalist Alex Matthiessen — the author’s son — will both read from “The Snow Leopard.” Also taking part in the evening will be Rose Styron, a human rights activist and longtime friend of Matthiessen; Buddhist photographer Peter Cunningham, who accompanied Matthiessen on his 1982 pilgrimage to Japan recounted in “Nine-Headed Dragon River”; and farmer, poet, educator, and former Zen student Scott Chaskey.

This event is free and open to the public. However, space is limited. Send an email to info@matthiessencenter.org to reserve a spot. Donations are welcome as the center continues its end of year fundraising campaign.
