On Wednesday, September 20, at 5:30 p.m., the Montauk Library will present a directed reading of Edward Albee’s “Seascape.” Produced by Josh Gladstone and directed by Paul Hecht, the cast includes Gerald Doyle, Susan Stout, John Kroft and Quinn Jackson.
In “Seascape,” a couple approaching retirement are at the beach discussing their concerns when another couple appears — two human-sized lizards who no longer feel at home in the sea. Like other Albee plays such as “Who”s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “A Delicate Balance,” “Seascape” focuses on the dynamic of interpersonal communications while including elements of comedy, fantasy, satire and absurdism.
The reading of “Seascape” is the last of the four play readings that the Montauk Library is presenting in 2023 as part of the Summertime Series, curated by Carolyn Balducci, The Montauk Library’s Adult Programs Director.
Edward Albee (1928-2016) is widely considered to be the foremost American playwright of his generation. He was the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions including Drama Desk Award Vernon Rice Award for “The Zoo Story” (1960), Tony Award for Best Play for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (1963) and Pulitzer Prize for Drama for “A Delicate Balance” (1967), “Seascape” (1975) and “Three Tall Women” (1994).
A resident of New York City, Albee was also a longtime resident of Montauk. The Edward F. Albee Foundation, Inc. funds The William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center (better known as “The Barn”) in Montauk as a residence for writers and visual artists. Edward Albee died at his home in Montauk on September 16, 2016.
