With April showers come May flowers, as well as a fantastical world — set under the sea — by Hampton Ballet Theatre School dancers, who will perform a trio of ballets this weekend at Guild Hall in East Hampton.
The spring ballet — to stage on Friday, April 12, at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at 1 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m. — begins with “Les Sylphides,” a short, non-narrative romantic ballet originally choreographed by Michael Fokine to music by Frederic Chopin. The Ballets Russes premiered the ballet blancin 1907 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and, on the East End, it will be danced by Professional Level 6 and 7 students, as well as guest artist Nick Peregrino.
A modern ballet en pointe, “Mendelara” — choreographed by Strickland’s mentor and teacher, Aras Ames — is reserved for Professional Level 7 students, while “Littlest Mermaid” will feature all students from the Hampton Ballet Theatre School and Peregrino.
“Located in a kingdom under the sea, mermaid princesses, seahorses, sharks, crabs, merwitches and all types of wondrous sea creatures will bring Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale to life,” according to a press release.
