Join The Church on Sunday, May 18, at noon in welcoming Adrienne Terry, visual artist and community advocate, as the “Insight Sunday” speaker for May. Terry will expand on the process behind her work “Dreamcatcher,” a dreamcatcher that goes beyond the traditional and that is included in the spring exhibition, “Eternal Testament,” which is curated by Jeremy Dennis and Meranda Roberts.
Terry will explore the techniques used to etch symbols and motifs, elaborate on her choice of materials and examine the tools she has used and some she is currently experimenting with. Following the discussion there will be a Q&A.
Symbolizing Terry’s deep connection to her Shinnecock roots and incorporating communal and personal narratives, “Dreamcatcher” puts a spotlight on material usage — featuring shells, feathers, and wampum pieces — and depicts the Shinnecock seal. Going beyond a traditional dreamcatcher, the work serves as an educational tool and is an act of cultural preservation.
Adrienne Terry lives in Shinnecock Territory, the ancestral homeland of the Shinnecock Native American tribe on Long Island. As a member of the Shinnecock tribe, she is committed to advocating for individuals who have experienced trauma and stress. She believes in the transformative power of arts and crafts as a therapeutic tool to address these issues. She focuses on helping people develop healthy self-perceptions and improve their interpersonal relationships. With a deep understanding of communities’ unique challenges, she emphasizes the importance of providing guidance, advocacy, and resources to enhance the overall quality of life for those in need.
Tickets for the talk are $10 (free for members with RSVP) at thechurchsagharbor.org. The Church is at 48 Madison Street in Sag Harbor.
