In celebration of The Church’s summer exhibition “Threading the Needle,” an exhibition that explores how contemporary artists are using weaving and fabric processes, The Church will host an Insight Sunday with artists Christa Maiwald and Lucy Winton who will discuss their practice in front of one of their works.
The talk will be held on Sunday, July 17, at 10:30 a.m. and the two will speak for around half an hour on the exhibition floor, before The Church is open to the public. A Q&A will follow, allowing attendees time to engage with the artists and their work. Insight Sundays are the ultimate behind the scenes sneak peek, and a wonderful opportunity to hear an artist focus on an individual piece, see it through their eyes, and explore how it relates to their body of work, career, process, and interests.
Christa Maiwald has worked in many mediums, including painting, sculpture, installations, video, and, since 2000, hand embroidery and photography. As a video artist in the 1970s, she had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum, Anthology Film Archives, Holly Solomon Gallery, and Franklin Furnace, among others, and was included in the 1979 Whitney Biennial.
In addition to a one-artist exhibition at Guild Hall Museum in 2013, her embroideries and photographs have been shown in solo and group shows internationally. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Arts & Design, the Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, and numerous private collections. Her work was recently included in the exhibition “Earth: Artists as Activists,” at the Southampton Arts Center.
Lucy Winton was born in 1956 in Boston, Massachusetts. As a young artist, Winton was breaking ground in the international art scene working with mixed media and creating earthy yet otherworldly compositions. Lucy received a bachelor’s degree from the University of California Santa Cruz and a master’s of fine arts from New York Academy of Art. Winton’s work has been shown all over the New York including at Guild Hall, Parrish Museum, Tripoli Gallery, Sara Nightingale, Southampton Arts Center and The Flag Art Foundation. She is represented by Tripoli Gallery.
