Join artist Tohanash Tarrant and learn the basics of beading. During a 90-minute workshop at The Church on Sunday, April 19, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Tarrant will offer techniques and tips while guiding participants through the steps to design and fabricate a beaded necklace of their own. In addition to the instructional portion of the workshop, Tarrant will also share examples of her own designs, providing an exclusive look into her work and process.
All necessary materials are provided and included in the cost of admission and can be taken home following the workshop.
Growing up on the Shinnecock Reservation, Tarrant shadowed her mother while she sat quietly for hours doing handwork — quilting blankets, beading hair ties and lacing shawls. From the time she could walk, she was dancing at powwows. Now she has two children of her own and her attention has turned from dancing “fancy shawl” herself to beading and sewing dance outfits for her kids and other relatives. Beadwork has long been among her passions and that shows in the care she gives to the detail and individuality of each new piece. Building a sustainable business model based on her creativity and ability has set Tarrant apart and given her inspiration to continue to share her art.
The cost of the workshop is $45 ($40 members)at thechurchsagharbor.org. The Church is at 48 Madison Street in Sag Harbor.
