Every Thursday afternoon for the past few years, local painters have gathered at the Southampton Cultural Center to paint as a group in conjunction with a workshop sponsored by the Southampton Artists Association.

The participating painters thought it might be interesting to choose a unifying theme. A few themes have been interpreted by the group over the years, this time around, the result is a dozen or so paintings of radishes that are now on view at SCC.

“The Radish Roundup,” which will remain on view at SCC through November, is a visual reminder of the joy of being part of a community that can, at times, be isolating. The SCC offers a space to work and a gallery for the Southampton Artists Association to exhibit a few times a year. The members show their work all over the East End, sometimes together, sometimes alone.

The Thursday group works individually in very different styles, but members support each other as a unit. That collaborative energy has spread from artistic expertise to all sorts of advice and ideas. The range of useful tips they share is broad — how to glaze a canvas, how to mix the perfect purple, what brushes work best, when and where to paint outdoors, for example. After a few hours of painting, the advice tends to broaden beyond the canvas to include topics like how to make a brimmed hat, how to raise tomatoes, how to raise children, what to plant to resist deer, what to paint to resist monotony. Painting successes, personal losses, birthdays, books to read, films to watch, artists to follow, not-to-be-missed exhibitions, all color the conversation — as do, of course, the radishes. At SCC, this humble vegetable, nature’s little creation usually underrated and hidden in a salad bowl, is now elevated to new heights in all its glory. Pass the salt please!

In addition to the radishes on view, the Southampton Artists Association’s fall exhibition and sale at SCC will run Thursday, October 26, to November Sunday, November 5, with a reception on Sunday, October 29, from 4 to 6 p.m. Southampton Cultural Center is at 25 Pond Lane in Southampton.
