Former head writer for the Howard Stern Show, Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling returns to The Suffolk on Saturday, March 1, at 8 p.m. Opening set will be performed by Long Island comedian Joe Crovella.
For 18 years Martling was head writer and a cast member on radio and television’s “Howard Stern Show.” His autobiography, “The Joke Man: Bow to Stern” was released October 2017 and his podcast “Stand-Up Memories” with fellow comic Peter Bales is in its third season.
In 1982, after founding Governor’s Comedy Shop in Levittown on Long Island and touring as a national headliner, on a suggestion from a Washington, D.C. comedy club owner, he blindly sent his three LPs to Howard Stern upon Stern’s arrival at WNBC-AM in New York City. Stern called him to make a guest appearance on his radio show. In 1986, Martling became a full-time cast member and the head writer of Stern’s show.
Martling left the Stern show in 2001 after 15-year run. He’s released six dirty joke CDs — “The Joke Man,” “Sgt. Pecker,” “Hot Dogs & Donuts,” Come Again?!,” F. Jackie” and “Snart,” as well as three videos, five joke books, and countless joke gadgets of all kinds for children as well as adults.
Tickets are $39 at thesuffolk.org. The Suffolk is at 118 East Main Street in Riverhead.
