Kick off the first weekend in December and Knowledge Friday at The Church with a woman known for kicking it into high gear by making a substantial difference in her community: Minerva Perez. On December 6, at 6 p.m., come hear Perez’s story and gather insight from one of the community’s most dynamic leaders.

How does someone go from a BFA in drama to running a 24/7 crisis shelter for women and children fleeing domestic abuse? How does that same person facilitate a respectful dialogue between Anglo and Latino communities creating a more inclusive community? Ask Perez, the executive director of OLA (Organización Latino Americana), a nonprofit Latino-focused advocacy organization.

Named “Sag Harbor Person of the Year” by The Sag Harbor Express in 2018, Perez continues to bring people together, create spaces of protection and celebrate unity in diversity.

“If you know you’re compelled and you know what you’re doing, what your intentions are, do it and learn as you go,” Perez has said.

The Church recommends that aspiring advocates and those looking for ways to impact their community come and learn from Perez, who will take part in a Q&A after her presentation.

Knowledge Fridays, held the first Friday of each month, highlight outstanding East End locals with various backgrounds and careers. The program allows the audience to meet and learn about dynamic, inspiring, and fascinating East Enders.

Tickets are $10 (members free with RSVP) at thechurchsagharbor.org. The Church is at 48 Madison Street in Sag Harbor.
