Lucille Khornak Holds Teen Selfie Contest

author on Jul 27, 2016

Fashion photographer and gallerist Lucille Khornak, who has worked with the likes of Giorgio Armani, Joan Rivers, Bill Clinton and Andy Warhol, calls all teenagers to participate in her selfie contest “Are You a Work of Art?” for a chance to win a free portrait session.

She created this contest out of her fascination with the popularity of selfies among adolescents, she said. As a renowned fashion and beauty photographer as well as a former model, she has specialized in portraits for more than 30 years. However, this recent craze of taking self-portraits via smartphone is foreign to her and she wants to learn more.

“I see all these selfies that everybody does and sometimes I’m intrigued at how teens see themselves,” Ms. Khornak explained. “I was like, ‘Let me see if I can get a closer bond to that and how and why they chose those photos.’ I enjoy helping teens become more confident and helping them learn to express themselves more in front of the camera.”

The winner of the selfie contest will receive a free photoshoot with Ms. Khornak. She said that it will take about an hour and a half with several rotations and changes in clothing at a location of the winner’s choice. She plans to create a collage of all other submissions and hang it in her eponymous Southampton Village gallery shortly after the contest ends.

Ms. Khornak provided some tips for teenagers thinking about partaking in the contest: “Use natural light if possible, and not a harsh light. Wear simple clothing so it’s not distracting. Have a great smile. And no duck lips!”

She and three others will judge the contest and choose the teen who best captures his or her inner and outer beauty in one photo. The deadline is August 15 and all submissions should be emailed to selfie@lucillekhornak.com. For more information, email studio@lucillekhornak.com.
