On August 18, Guild Hall in East Hampton hosted renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson for “StarTalk Live,” a sold out show in its newly renovated theater. The presentation was a road show version of Tyson’s popular “StarTalk” radio show, which bridges science, pop culture, and comedy with clarity, humor and passion.
Joining Tyson on stage were his co-host, comedian Chuck Nice, and Kimberly K. Arcand, an expert in astronomy visualization who works with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory through the Center for Astrophysics, a collaboration between Harvard College Observatory and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
Arkand shared with the audience details, images and sounds from her work related to the sonification of astrophysics data sets — that is, imagery collected by Chandra and other deep space telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. Arkand illustrated different ways of presenting and visualizing data and explained how things like sonification can be used to make space images more accessible to blind or low vision people.
