On Friday evening, November 13, as part of the 17th annual OLA Film Festival, guest curated by the Organización Latino-Americana of Eastern Long Island (OLA), the Parrish Art Museum will screen the award-winning film “NO” (Chile, 2012,119 minutes, R, Spanish with English subtitles). The on-site program at the Parrish begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception, followed by the screening at 6 p.m.
An Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film and the winner of 13 international awards, “NO” is director Pablo Larraín’s dramatic depiction of a landmark vote in Chile in 1988. When international pressure forced military dictator Augusto Pinochet to call an election on his own presidency, the Chilean citizens have the opportunity to vote yes or no to the question of extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the no vote persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. Against all odds, with scant resources and under scrutiny by the despot’s minions, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free.
“I am delighted to continue our partnership with OLA with this timely film, and to be able to welcome our Spanish-speaking community into the museum,” said Corinne Erni, the museum’s curator of special projects. “It is particularly important in trying times like these to be a trusted center for cultural engagement and to celebrate our region’s diverse cultural heritage.”
OLA's Latino Film Festival has partnered with the Parrish Art Museum for the last 12 years. OLA selects films from around the globe that challenge, engage, and entertain both Spanish and English-speaking audiences. OLA festivals are characterized by music, dancing, food, and wine from Latino/Hispanic countries.
