Spend your Sunday exploring the work of American Poet Grace Schulman with The Church. “Again, the Dawn: New and Selected Poems, 1976-2022,” is Schulman’s latest book of poems and her crowning achievement to date. On Sunday, April 23, at 2 p.m., Schulman will read from and discuss her new collection (it also happens to be her birthday).

Schulman splits her time between New York City and East Hampton, drawing inspiration from the hectic urban life and from the contrasting calm beauty of the East End. “Again, the Dawn” is constructed of poems from eight books and includes a wide variety of new poems, including recent work that shows her devotion to the history and culture of the East End, especially Springs. This collection spans decades but the power of Schulman’s world perspective is as relevant as ever. Schulman ranges through grief, politics, the world, art, and music, as well as human joys and sufferings. She will speak on her life in poetry and her life on the East End. Following Schulman’s reading will be a Q&A and the afternoon will end with a book signing with books of “Again, the Dawn,” provided by Canio’s Books.

Grace Schulman received the Frost Medal for Distinguished Lifetime Achievement in American Poetry and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She is the author of nine books of poems. Her recent memoir is “Strange Paradise: Portrait of a Marriage.” Among other honors are the Aiken Taylor Award for poetry, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and five Pushcart Prizes. Distinguished Professor at Baruch College, C.U.N.Y. she is editor of “The Poems of Marianne Moore.” Schulman is a former Poetry Editor of The Nation and a former Director of the Poetry Center, 92Y.

Tickets for Grace Schulman’s presentation are $10 at thechurchsagharbor.org. The Church is at 48 Madison Street in Sag Harbor.

Preservation as a Creative Act

“If we are to preserve culture, we must continue to create it.” — Johan Huizinga From rehabilitation to restoration to public acquisition, the act of preservation requires inspiration and vision.
