Fifty years ago, a grass-roots effort was launched by Robert Pine to preserve and protect Sag Harbor’s historic architecture for future generations. Buildings were surveyed and entered into the National Register of Historic Places, the Sag Harbor Village Historic District was created, and a Board of Historic Preservation and Architectural Review was formed to manage the growth and changes that would impact the village’s architectural heritage.
Now, the long-awaited and much-anticipated companion piece to Pine’s seminal publication about the need for a village historic district is being published. “Preserving Sag Harbor: The Historic District After 50 Years” will be released on November 19. This “anniversary” book written by Zach Studenroth and edited by Bryan Boyhan, looks back at the history of preservation, restoration and adaptive reuse in Sag Harbor, highlights the work of private organizations and individuals who “saved Sag Harbor,” and provides in-depth case studies that demonstrate the value and success of historic preservation in a place like Sag Harbor. On Sunday, November 19, from 4 to 6 p.m., Sag Harbor Historical Museum will host a book launch at the Sag Harbor home of Shannah Stern. The book is $40 and available online at sagharborhistorical.org/bookstore.php.
