The Playwrights’ Theatre of East Hampton at LTV Studios will present “Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed and Unbowed” on Friday, March 14, at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. The one-woman show by Ingrid Griffith is an immersive and interactive show about a trailblazing visionary and the first African American woman to run for the presidency of the U.S.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Chisholm, the Brooklyn-born daughter of Caribbean parents, was on a mission. They called her the Black Joan of Arc. She called herself “fighting” Shirley as she faced off against the political machine in the name of justice.

Griffith has been touring “Unbossed & Unbowed” across the country with the hope that Chisholm’s largely unheard story will enlighten audiences and inspire them to take action that will bring about positive change. The play won Outstanding Playwriting Award at the Hear Her Call Caribbean American Women’s Playwriting Festival in 2020. Griffith received a Danny Glover Power of Dream Award in 2022. The play was winner of the 2023 Suzi Bass Award, Atlanta’s professional theater awards, for Outstanding Production about Social Justice. Ingrid Griffith was also 2023 Suzi Bass Award Nominee for Outstanding Principal Performer in a Play.

Tickets to the play are $20 in advance ($25 at the door) and VIP café seating is available for $50. Students attend for free with a valid ID. For more information and tickets, visit ltveh.org. LTV Studios is at 75 Industrial Road in Wainscott.
