The Playwrights’ Theatre of East Hampton at LTV Studios will present “Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed and Unbowed” on Friday, October 4, at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. This immersive and interactive one-woman show by Ingrid Griffith is about a trailblazing and visionary woman who was the first African American woman to run for the presidency of the U.S.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Chisholm, a Brooklyn-born daughter of Caribbean parents, was on a mission. They called her the Black Joan of Arc. She called herself “fighting” Shirley as she faced off against the political machine in the name of justice.

Ingrid Griffith is a New York City-based actor and the creator and performer. Griffith has been touring “Unbossed & Unbowed” across the country with the hope that Chisolm’s largely unknown story will enlighten audiences and inspire them to take action that will bring about positive change.

The show won Outstanding Playwriting Award at the Hear Her Call Caribbean American Women’s Playwriting Festival (2020). Griffith received a Danny Glover Power of Dream Award (2022), a Guyana Cultural Award for her work’s originality, scope, impact, influence, and her pioneering spirit (2023). The play was winner of the 2023 Suzi Bass Award, Atlanta’s professional theater awards, for Outstanding Production about Social Justice (produced by Out of Hand Theater in Atlanta, Georgia) and Griffith was a 2023 Suzi Bass Award Nominee for Outstanding Principal Performer in a Play.

Griffith is also known for her award-winning solo show, “Demerara Gold,” a Guyanese girl’s coming-to-America story that addresses what she and her family gained and lost.

Griffith has been in off-Broadway and regional stage productions in classical and contemporary roles. She is delighted to be collaborating with the team at LTV to share Shirley Chisholm’s story during the current election season — and to be celebrating the centennial of Shirley Chisholm’s birth this year, on November 30, 1924.

Tickets for the show are $20 in advance, $25 at the door and VIP Café seating is available for $50. For more details and to purchase tickets, visit ltveh.org. LTV Studios is 75 Industrial Road in Wainscott.
