Southampton Arts Center August Programs

Summer is in full swing at Southampton Arts Center (SAC). From the return of ICP Talks, this year with a focus on street photography, to a hilarious reading of celebrity autobiographies by their fellow stars, to thought-provoking films and panels, there is no shortage of things to do at SAC.

Here’s what’s on deck for August …

“Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed & Unbowed” with Southampton African American Museum – Sunday, August 1 at 2 p.m.

This solo performance about Shirley Chisholm is written and performed by Ingrid Griffith, directed by Zoya Kachadurian. Chisholm was the first African American woman to win a seat in Congress and the first to run for president of the United States. In the 1960s, the Brooklyn-born daughter of Caribbean immigrant parents decided to enter politics to speak for the disenfranchised. There, she shook up America’s political machine, the all-boys network, and said ‘no’ to the status quo. She called herself “Fighting Shirley.”

A panel discussion after the performance will feature Griffith, Kachadurian, Shinnecock Nation member and activist Tela Loretta Troge, Esq., and African American Museum of Nassau County Director of Art and Curator Minna Dunn, moderated by Southampton African American Museum Executive Director Brenda Simmons.

Wellness:

Bande Barre – Fridays and Saturdays through August 14 at 8 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

This is a one-stop-shop for a complete body and mind workout.

Bande Cardio Fit – Fridays and Saturdays through August 14 at 9:15 a.m.

This 45-minute class highlights everything bande does best in an efficient (and addicting) format.

Forward Space – Sundays from August 15 to 29 at 9:35 a.m. and 11:05 a.m.

A 50-minute nonstop, easy-to-follow, high-energy sweat session driven by the inherent power of music and movement. A continuous cardio vibe with an easy choreographed combo at the end.

Kids:

The Giant Room – Runway Show, Thursday, August 5, at 4 p.m.

Families with kids 3 to 12 years old are invited to design and present an awesome

Boogaloo! – Thursday, August 12, at 4 p.m.

Inspired by Latin boogaloo, or bugalú, “Spanglish Fly” plays irresistible grooves that blend Afro-Caribbean rhythms with the fervor, the feeling, and the harmonics of ’60s soul.

Goat on a Boat Puppet Show: “Fox Fables,” Thursday, August 19 at 4 p.m.

This story is about a fox who loses his precious tail and with it, his identity. He tries to be several other animals instead before realizing the moral lesson of this ancient fable.

The Giant Room – Game Carnival, Thursday, August 26 at 4 p.m.

Design all sorts of games from games of chance, to mazes, grabbers, electronic games, and everything in-between. This program is a blend of STEM and art activities for families with kids 3 to 12 years old.

Talks:

ICP Talks: Street photography with Richard Renaldi, Thursday, August 5, at 7 p.m.

The first of three illustrated talks presented with the International Center of Photography (ICP). Portrait photographer Richard Renaldi will discuss his work including his recent project, “Touching Strangers,” where he paired together strangers on the street, asking them to touch or embrace one another to create moments of vulnerability and compassion captured in his striking photographs.

ICP Talks: Street Photography with Andre Wagner, Thursday, August 12, at 7 p.m.

The second of three illustrated talks features Brooklyn-based photographer Andre Wagner who will discuss his investigation of the American social landscape, exploring themes of race, class, community, and cultural identity.

ICP Talks: Street Photography with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb, Thursday, August 19, at 7 p.m.

The third of three illustrated talks features photographers Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb in a dynamic talk titled, “The Blind Man & The Bus: On Street Photography and the Poetic Image.” The collaborators will show a number of projects and discuss their work in the context of the tradition of street photography.

Bill Cunningham Was There, Thursday, August 26, at 7 p.m.

A look back at the genius of the late New York Times photojournalist Bill Cunningham, with John Kurdewan and Steven Stolman, co-authors of the new Rizzoli book, “Bill Cunningham Was There: Spring Flings + Summer Soirées.” Lecture, book signing and cocktail reception.

Film:

“Out of Africa,” Friday, August 6, at 8 p.m.

Initially set on being a dairy farmer, the aristocratic Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) travels to Africa to join her husband, Bror (Klaus Maria Brandauer), who instead spends their money on a coffee plantation. After discovering Bror is unfaithful, Karen develops feelings for hunter Denys (Robert Redford), but realizes he prefers a simplistic lifestyle compared to her upper-class background.

Film + Panel: “The Edge of Existence,” Sunday, August 8, at 7:30 p.m.

“The Edge of Existence” highlights issues of human-wildlife conflict in the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania, where humans and wildlife are struggling to co-exist.

Film + Panel: “The Devil Wears Prada,” Friday, August 13, at 7:30 p.m.

Andy (Anne Hathaway) is a recent college graduate with big dreams. Upon landing a job at prestigious Runway magazine, she finds herself the assistant to diabolical editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Andy questions her ability to survive her grim tour as Miranda’s whipping girl without getting scorched. A panel discussion prior to the film will be hosted by Fern Mallis, and will feature producer Wendy Finerman.

“The Gospel According to André,” Sunday, August 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Filmmaker Kate Novack explores the life and career of fashion journalist André Leon Talley — from his childhood in the segregated South to his iconic, barrier-breaking work at Women’s Wear Daily, W and Vogue.

Mountainfilm on Tour – Friday, August 27, at 7:30 p.m.

Mountainfilm on Tour brings the year’s most inspiring documentary short films to communities around the world.

Live:

Hamptons Fashion Week – Saturday, August 7, at 5 p.m.

A variety of celebrity designers will take center stage, outdoors and indoors, and feature an array of collections in a full-frontal runway. Designers include Cesar Galindo, Brochu Walker, Culture Trees, and House of Barretti.

Hamptons Jazz Fest with Benny Benack Quintet, Saturday, August 14, at 7 p.m.

Cultural diversity and roots of jazz celebrated with performing artists from the U.S. and around the world. This free performance features the Benny Benack Quintet.

“Celebrity Autobiography,” Sunday, August 22, at 7:30 p.m.

All-star cast, including Christie Brinkley, Matthew Broderick, Susan Lucci, Ralph Macchio, and creators Eugene Pack and Dayle Reyfel act out hilarious passages from other stars’ memoirs.

Gala:

Patrons Circle Dinner – Friday, August 20, at 6:30 p.m.

Southampton Arts Center invites friends, both new and old alike, to join a magical and intimate “appreciation” dinner in the Caesar Garden on the iconic grounds of 25 Jobs Lane.

Southampton Arts Center is at 25 Jobs Lane, Southampton. SAC’s galleries are open Thursday through Monday, from noon to 5 p.m. On view is “Beyond The Streets on Paper.” “Whimsy,” SAC’s outdoor sculpture garden, is open daily through Labor Day weekend.
