Banned Books Week, which is from September 22 to 28, is an annual awareness campaign that celebrates the freedom to read, draws attention to banned and challenged books and highlights persecuted individuals. Promoted by the American Library Association and Amnesty International, for the year’s Banned Book Week, Sally Grant at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport decided to make it a happening with an art event.

“About a month ago, in my role as art exhibits curator at the Greenport Library, I made a call for artists for the exhibition ‘Banned! Artists Respond to Book Banning,’” Grant explained. “The Friends of Floyd Memorial Library supplied the 10” x 8” book-shaped canvases. We didn’t know what response we’d get, but the exhibition opened this past Saturday [September 21], in tandem with Banned Books Week, with nearly 70 works on display.”

The exhibit will be on view at the library through Friday, October 11, and ends with a celebratory closing reception from 4:30 to 8 p.m.

All of the canvases are for sale by lottery at $100 each with 70 percent of the proceeds going to the artist and 30 percent to Friends of Floyd Memorial Library.

The Floyd Memorial Library is at 539 First Street Greenport. For more information, visit floydmemoriallibrary.org or call 631-477-0660.
