The paintings of Ben Georgia will be featured in a one-man show opening Saturday, October 9, with a reception from 2 to 5 p.m. at Colm Rowan Fine Art, 55 Main Street, East Hampton.

Ben Georgia was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1941. While in high school, he volunteered for the Marine Corps and was sent to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

In 1969, he began attending classes at Columbia University with Theodoros Stamos, a first-generation abstract expressionist. Stamos was a signatory to the famous letter of 1950 delivered in protest by leading lights of the abstract expressionist movement to the president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Roland Redmond. When Stamos left Columbia University and began to teach at the Art Students League in 1970, Georgia followed him. He would continue under the mentorship of Stamos until 1975.

Ben Georgia has had a long and illustrious career as an abstract colorist. He has exhibited widely and his paintings are in many distinguished collections. He keeps studios in Maine, New Jersey, and Florida and continues to exhibit in important art fairs across the United States.
