On Saturday, November 4, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., delve into quilting and explore its applications as an artistic medium at The Church. Instructed by multidisciplinary artist William Daniels, participants will be guided through the process and technique of quilting by hand as they transform ordinary textiles into compelling compositions. Historically rooted in storytelling, resistance, and community building, quilting has long been an outlet for creative expression, and Daniels continues this tradition in his work confronting contemporary issues through textile-based work.

Over the course of this workshop, each participant will plan, develop, and fabricate a unique 24” x 24” quilt block, learning fundamental quilting skills, tricks and techniques along the way. All materials, equipment, and supplies will be provided. No prior knowledge of quilting or textiles is required.

William Daniels is an independent curator and visual artist working primarily with textiles. His art quilts and accessories feature traditional quilt blocking and paper piecing techniques, but he sometimes utilizes nontraditional components.

He draws inspiration from urban art practice that confronts contemporary issues and is always experimenting to integrate modern archetypes with historical, societal, or spiritual topics. While some of the concepts in his work are quite unambiguous and literal, others are abstract references to the anthropological experience, individuality, or contain esoteric philosophies and historical references from the coded glyphs of ancient cultures.

Daniels was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Currently, he lives, works, and creates art in the Central Harlem section of New York City. He holds a bachelor of arts in Visual Arts from SUNY Empire State College, a Master of Science degree in Business/Project Management from New York University and is currently a Ph.D. candidate pursuing an interdisciplinary degree in Art Theory, Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts in Portland, Maine.

The cost of the workshop is $125, which includes all supplies and equipment. The Church is at 48 Madison Street in Sag Harbor. For details, visit thechurchsagharbor.org.
