A mere 90 miles from Manhattan lies a cultural enclave rich in both literary and artistic history — this creative hub is Shelter Island, the 27-square-mile stretch of land that is a cultural gem in its own right. Home to many widely historically recognized artisans and creatives, there is a strong sense of treasured community. This vibrant hamlet preserves tradition in an ever-changing world, and in that spirit will be host in August to ArtSI — the perennial open studios tours comprised of local artists that is now celebrating its 14th consecutive year.
This year’s ArtSI will take place Saturday and Sunday, August 17 and 18, from noon to 5 p.m. both days with 20 artists opening their doors to their studios. Founded in 2010, ArtSI (Artists of Shelter Island) began as a break-away group from the much larger and well-established Artists Alliance of East Hampton (AAEH) and that spirit remains amongst the group. As a novel and individual concept, it was an immediate hit with art goers. This year the group dedicates the weekend event in memoriam for members Janet Culbertson and Mike Zisser who both died in 2023.
Many of the ArtSI multi-disciplined artist members showcase their work at fine art galleries in Manhattan and other major cities and will be presenting all new pieces, in varying mediums, for highly rare and intimate viewings. Featured artists include: Connie Abate, Sally Jacobs Baker, Tia Bowman, Linda Brienza, Fred Buonocore, Catherine Corry, Kathryn A. Cunningham, Roz Dimon, Laurie Dolphin, Melora Griffis, Kathy Hammond, Megan Hergrueter, Lily Hoffman, Diana Malcolmson, Mary Ann Moy, Carl Norr, Susan Schrott, June Shatken, Jana Sheinker and Peter Waldner
Admission is free at all studios. Cash is required for the South Ferry. A map of participating studios and other information is available at artsi.info.
