Artist and teacher Howard Rose will host three winter workshops at the historic Nathaniel Rogers House designed to help artists fine tune their skills or beginners get more comfortable creating art. The workshops are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, January 11, February 8 and March 8. The cost of each workshop is $20 per person. The Bridgehampton Museum’s Nathaniel Rogers House is at 2539 Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton. For details, visit bhmuseum.org or call 631-537-1088.
“Logical Perspective” on January 11
Learn the basics of how to see perspective in a logical and easy way with a few easy tricks. Rose has written a small book with all his rules and exercises on perspective that each student will be given. Bring along photos to use as demos to find perspective and a drawing pad along with any drawing implements you wish to use. The museum will have extra paper, pencils and rulers available.
“Color Mixing” on February 8
In this class students will be limited to working with only red, blue, yellow, black and white paints and Rose will guide them in learning to find the colors they need. Limiting a pallet can be a great tool for developing skills and it is also functionally easier to carry less materials when traveling with art supplies. Students are asked to bring red, yellow, blue, white and black paints of their choice (oil, acrylic, gauche or watercolors) and a canvas or two along with some brushes.
“Framing a Scene With Your Phone” on March 8
In this final class Rose will teach students how to use two tools they use every day to help them make better paintings — their eyes and their smartphone. Lessons focus on how to properly frame a scene and properly take a picture of it to paint later. Bring smartphones and be ready to look at and review the pictures that students have taken of sunsets, beaches and other scenes. Weather permitting, the group will venture outside and put the lessons to work.
