“I think, to a poet, the human community is like the community of birds to a bird, singing to each other. Love is one of the reasons we are singing to one another, love of language itself, love of sound, love of singing itself, and love of the other birds.” — Sharon Olds
After a warmly received inaugural program, “Verse 1 – The Sag Harbor Saints,” at The Church in Sag Harbor, on Sunday, January 26, at 2 p.m., The Church presents “The Power of Poetry” a second iteration, “Verse 2 – An Ode to Some Odes,” with the voices of three acclaimed poets — Paul Auster, Denis Johnson, and Sharon Olds.
This recurring program invites the community to come together and celebrate poetry, the beauty of words and the ability to capture the human experience with a community-driven poetry read-in. Each read-in presents a curated selection of poems stitched together by a common thematic thread. That thread this time around is the three poets featured within “Some Odes,” a small-scale exhibition running concurrently with the large-scale exhibition “Some of Tom’s Typewriters.” Participants are invited to read, listen and think about the poetry in real-time in the main gallery amid the multidimensional exhibition within an exhibition.
