In order to stay alive in the District 36 Tournament, the East Hampton Little League 12-and-under All-Stars needed to win Tuesday’s game against Southampton while also getting some help from a fellow South Fork league to advance through pool play.
If East Hampton defeated Southampton on Tuesday, which occurred too late for results to appear in this week’s issue, it would finish pool play with a 2-2 record, but there are two other teams, East End and North Shore American, who could also finish with the same record. Since only the top two teams in each pool move on to the single-elimination playoffs, whichever team with the best run differential moves on.
After starting the tournament with a pair of tough losses — a 1-0 loss to North Shore American on June 26 and a 7-4 loss to Longwood on June 30 — East Hampton got into the win column this past Friday in a 9-0 victory over East End. Manager Erick Bock said Trevor Meehan and Dennis Ruiz both pitched well and it was a team effort on offense, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by Tucker Bock.
Coach Bock said the loss to Longwood stung since his team was up 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth with Kai Alversa pitching one of the best games he ever saw him pitch — Coach Bock was his coach this past season as well. But some defensive mistakes and a questionable call by an umpire allowed Longwood, one of the stronger teams in the tournament this year, to come back and win the game. Coach Bock said Jackson Carney “made some incredible plays at shortstop.”
East Hampton’s 12U squad this year includes Kai and Finn Alversa, Luca Biondo, Tucker Bock, Parker Burns, Jackson Carney, Miles Eckardt, Kieran Hildreth, Declan Larkin, Sullivan Matthews, Trevor Meehan, Dennis Ruiz and Harry Thomas. Coach Bock is the team’s manager with East Hampton varsity baseball head coach Vinny Alversa and Jason Biondo as assistant coaches.
A 10-9 walk-off victory over North Shore American at Pantigo Field in East Hampton on Friday kept the East Hampton Little League 10-and-under All-Stars’ undefeated record intact. They were looking to run the gamut of their pool with their final game scheduled for Tuesday against Eastport-South Manor, with results of that game occurring too late to appear in this week’s issue.
Regardless if they won Tuesday’s game or not, though, the 10U All-Stars were all but guaranteed a spot in the single-elimination playoffs, which start later this week.
Alex Bobeck’s ground ball to first base scored Aiden Stone from third base with the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth of Friday’s victory over North Shore American. East Hampton also defeated North Shore National, 8-7, on June 26, defeated Southampton, 11-1, on June 28, and also defeated Riverhead, 17-5, on June 30.
This year’s 10U squad includes Scott Abran, Declan Balnis, Ryan Balnis, Alex Bobeck, Kix Bock, Casey Carney, Jackson Cook, Jake Daniels, Colin Grisch, Cayden Sokol, Aiden Stone and Elias Wojtusiak. Coaches include John Grisch, Ray Wojtusiak and Scott Abran.
