The East Hampton boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Division III Championships at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on Thursday, October 28, and both teams came through with their expected results, more or less.

The boys placed second in their race behind expected champion Westhampton Beach. East Hampton and Harborfields actually had the same number of points (65), so it came down to the sixth-man rule for the tiebreaker and Bonacker Dante Sasso (19:51.7) beat out Tornado Hartley Semmes (20:13.30) to make up the final decision.

Evan Masi led East Hampton and placed fifth overall in Division III in 17:49. His head coach, Kevin Barry, said it was the best race he saw Masi run in two years, which means he is fully rehabbed from an injury that had been slowing him down.

“I knew he was going to run really well because he had his game face on today,” Barry said.

Every other Bonacker finished with season or personal bests, Barry said. Amari Gordon placed 11th in the division in 18:38.3. Isaiah Robins (18:53.6) and Brayan Rivera (18:57.7) finished 14th and 15th, respectively, and Liam Fowkes (19:51.1) came in along with Sasso. Colin Schaefer finished 31st in 20:24.

The results were overall positive for Barry, who expects his team will push Westhampton Beach for the county title at the state qualifier this Friday, November 5, back at Sunken Meadow. Regardless of whether or not they win a county title, the Bonackers will be looking to grab the handful of spots that will be left to make it to the state meet.

East Hampton’s girls were one of just a handful of teams in the mix for the Division III Championship last week, but it was Sayville that had the upper hand, finishing with 29 points, ahead of both Westhampton Beach (56) and the Bonackers (59).

Dylan Cashin led the girls, finishing fifth in the division in 20:34.7. Brianna Chavez placed 14th in 23:30.4, followed by Zion Osei (17th/ 23:34.1), Emma Hren (21st/23:58.4), Ryleigh O’Donnell (25th/24:41), Emma Tepan (26th/24:47.3) and Riley Miles (28th/25:23.8).

Like the boys, the girls will be looking to have their best race at the state qualifier this Friday where they will have a shot at a county title and the possibility of sending a few girls to the state meet.
