The end-of-the-season magic the East Hampton girls volleyball team found last year couldn’t be found last week.
Needing to win one of its final two matches to clinch a berth into the Suffolk County Class A postseason, the Bonackers lost its first match last week on October 12, 3-0, at home to East Islip — the much more winnable match, with the season finale set for Friday at League VI champion and undefeated Sayville. East Hampton wound up falling, 3-0, to the Golden Flashes, finishing the regular season with a 6-8 record, one win shy of qualifying.
Prior to the match against playoff-bound East Islip, which was a close match with set scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-14, East Hampton honored its seven seniors, Baye Bogetti, Caroline DiSunno, Ella Eggert, Jameson Grant, Scout Lynch, Chloë Swickard and Emma Terry. All were on the team for last year’s run when it defeated Mount Sinai late in the season to end the team’s two-year playoff absence before bowing out in the first round after a loss to Eastport-South Manor.
East Hampton head coach Alex Choi thought his team could pull it off, but it made too many mistakes during some key matches that ultimately came back to haunt them. Still, though, he was proud of the way his team fought throughout the season.
“I was honestly very happy with how they played those past two matches, despite the losses. The girls came a long way from the beginning of the season, and even were able to hang with Sayville (25-22, 25-17, 25-22), one of the top teams in the county,” he said. “The girls genuinely surprised me a few times with their determination to get it done.”
This year’s team was made up of seven seniors and eight juniors, so half the team will be expected to be back next season. But Choi said he is going to miss this year’s seniors.
“All of these girls had pivotal roles on the team,” he said. “My setter, Scout, will be very missed as someone who worked her butt off to get that ball up for someone. Jameson, while only on the court for part of the match, was always talking and communicating on the court. Emma and Caroline were both essential offensive options. Chloë was a fantastic DS and always moved for a ball. Baye was my most consistent hitter, and did not make many errors. Ella was a pleasure on and off the court, and always willing to do whatever was needed of her.”
